Hi!
I'm Lawrence “The
Fight Medic” Ferrier, owner of corner-tech.com and lead fight medic of TCT!
I have been involved with martial
arts almost my whole life. Back in the day when WTF full contact Olympic style was the hottest thing! I also participated
in many light contact point tournaments. Now, being too old and broken to fight anymore I had to find another
way to stay in the game. A few years ago I had a couple of relatives and friends that were fighting on the mma amateur circuit
and I started cornering for them. That’s all it took and I was an instant mma fight junkie! I quickly became friends
with the promoter of Sik-Jitsu in Spokane, WA who I am greatly thankful to for letting me practice the art of being a cutman
at his shows. Without him Corner-Tech would not exist!
After
awhile, it had become evident to me that there were many other things that needed to be done at these shows! Like wrapping
hands, greasing faces, taping glove straps and helping injured fighters after their fights. A few times
I have seen injured fighters wandering around looking for help, even at some pro shows! So, I asked some
friends if they wanted to help me work the shows! With unanimous hell yes’s! the team thing got started! It worked out
great because everything needing to be done got done! The promoter was able to concentrate on all the things he needed to
do!
It
didn’t take long and we started working for other promoters.
One thing led to another and the Corner-Tech concept was conceived.
I set my DVR to
record every fight event on TV that I could, then I would use frame by frame mode to study the pro’s cornering techniques
and equipment used. I seen the bands they had on their wrists and promptly made myself one. I seen the pro’s had the
Vaseline on the back of the hand and thought that was messy way to do things, I thought there had to be a better way. I thought
of the gauntlet on predators forearm and set out to make something of that nature. That also sparked the thought of updating
the cutmen of old into the future with high-tech trauma equipment and techniques. I still can’t understand why somebody
else hadn’t done this yet! I guess fate saved it for me to do!
Many times after arriving home very late after fights, I would stay awake for a couple more
hours studying until I did a face plant into my keyboard! A few times I would wake up with keyboard pattern imprinted into
my cheek!
Many
people don’t know about the countless hours I have spent on the internet researching and studying every facet of any
medical field’s that could be useable in this art of being a cutman. I’ve interviewed all types of medical personnel
from Neuro-Surgeons, Head Trauma Specialists, Certified Wound Specialists, EMT’s, Respiratory Specialists, Dermatologists,
ER Doctors, the list goes on! I also have downloaded from the internet every type anatomy chart I thought
I could use to study the human body and its functions! Just like a fighter works very hard to be a champion, I too work very
hard to be a champion at what I do!
After working so many shows and almost every single weekend for a
few years now, the experience racks up pretty fast! I am a certified advanced first-aid medic and multi-state licensed!
We rarely ever
get a weekend off anymore! I don’t mind though, I would do this every day of the week if I could!
The fight medic team thing works really smooth because promoters have so much to do with organizing, dealing with no-shows
and last minute fight card matching, making sure fighters are ready for the next bout and all the other things they have to
do! Most promoters that have used our service are still repeat customers! Usually we have about 5-6 guy's work the event!
It really makes the whole show go a lot smoother when you have enough people to accomplish all the tasks that need to be done!
We
usually have two fight medics (cutmen) that do grease and fighter checks! Plus one or two people running supplies to the medics
and doing blood cleanup in the cage. They also help the other person wrap hands, filling up ice bags and treating fighters
at our first aid station that we provide! All of our staff is in constant radio communication with each other so they can
be directed where needed! Our system really works smooth!! We are a literal hardcore "Full service" for promoters
and it works great!
If you want to add a hardcore professional element to your shows, give us a try!
Thanks!
